Found this leetel dood in the forest near my house. I live in Maryland, and I’m curious as to what it will become as it grows. Any ideas?
Skunk cabbage? I don’t know if it really does much else, other than what it looks like in this picture.
Skunk cabbage! Specifically, Eastern skunk cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus. Those are the flowers—actually a special type of inflorescence, featuring a spathe (a special type of bract, which is a special type of modified leaf—sorry if I’m duplicating info you already know!) wrapped around the spadix (a long spike of packed-tight flowers). They will also grow really gorgeous big bright green leaves a little later on in the season.
They’re also super cool because they do a thing called THERMOGENESIS! They produce heat to attract pollinating flies, and can actually melt through ice/snow to bloom!
See, this is one of the reasons you are awesome, Semi, you make things like Skunk cabbage awesome. I didn’t know that, so thank you, that actually does make Skunk cabbage pretty cool hahaha.
THERMOGENESIS!!!! That just sounds badass.
Damn Semi beat me to it! xD
Also the big green cabbage/hosta-like leaves smell like a skunk when crushed, hence the common name Skunk Cabbage~
Finally did the cliche coffee on the street corner cafe. Problem was the waiter was a sweetheart. #paris #coffeeproblems #coffeesmut #coffee
I daydream over a cup of coffee
